Christina Hendricks, who rose to international fame thanks to her part on “Mad Men” and for being very open about her curvier figure (by Hollywood standards, at the very least), has just been named the Hottest Woman of the Year by the prestigious Esquire magazine. The mag features a steamy photospread with the star but also an interview which reminds once more, if need was for that in the first place, just what it is that makes her so special, as ONTD can confirm.

For starters, fans must already know that Christina is a very modest woman, especially when it comes to being the recipient of compliments and people’s admiration. She doesn’t see herself as more beautiful than many other women, and this is perhaps among the reasons people love her – because she’s relatable. Moreover, the star believes beauty is more about attitude than about being of a certain size, and she always makes sure she gets this message across.

She also speaks about men and how she sees their relationship with women. “We remember forever what you say about the bodies of other women. When you mention in passing that a certain woman is attractive – could be someone in the office, a woman on the street, a celebrity, any woman in the world, really – your comment goes into a steel box and it stays there forever. We will file the comment under ‘Women He Finds Attractive.’ It’s not about whether or not we approve of the comment,” the star says. She also speaks about men and how she sees their relationship with women. “We remember forever what you say about the bodies of other women.
LOS ANGELES – Box office watchers expect widely-anticipated sci-fi movie “Avatar” to make more than $75 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters this coming weekend following its debut on Friday.

Industry analysts told Reuters that if the movie from “Titanic” director James Cameron sets cash registers ringing as much as they predict, it will be a victory for the movie and its studio 20th Century Fox, as well as for Hollywood in its latest push into 3D movies.

“For a lot of older people, it’s going to be the first film that they see in 3D,” said Jeff Bock, box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations Co.

“Don’t be surprised if it hits that billion dollar mark if it really takes off and becomes the event film of the season,” he said.

But for “Avatar’s” opening weekend, Bock expects the less astronomical figure of $75 million in the U.S. and Canada, although he said a $100 million opening is possible.

Paul Dergarabedian, president of Hollywood.com Box Office, said the film, which will begin playing in midnight screenings Friday, could earn between $85 million and $100 million.

That would be far short of 2009’s biggest three-day weekend debut, the $142.8 million raked in by vampire romance movie “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” last month.

Cameron’s “Avatar” tells of a soldier from Earth sent to infiltrate members of an alien race and the bond he forms with them, including one attractive woman in particular.

Fox said this week that “Avatar” will open in more than 3,300 theaters domestically, including 2,100 3D locations.

Online ticket seller MovieTickets.com has said 78 percent of its advance ticket buyers for “Avatar” were male, while rival outlet Fandango.com said 68 percent of its “Avatar” customers were men.

Cameron’s 1997 film “Titanic” made a record $1.8 billion worldwide, in large part by appealing to women who went more than once to see the film’s emotional tale of ill-fated love.

While more has been made of “Avatar’s” 3D look than its romance, Los Angeles Times critic Kenneth Turan wrote that the film is “a boys’ adventure with a major romantic element” and he predicted that people will see it more than once.

The iPad is a tablet computer developed by Apple Inc. Similar in function to an iPod Touch with four times the display area, it will allow multi-touch interaction with print, video, photos, and audio; connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi and, on certain models, 3G; and will run apps designed specifically for the iPad as well as most iPhone OS apps. The device will have an LED-backlit 9.7-inch (25 cm) color IPS LCD display and use a virtual keyboard for text input The iPad was announced on January 27, 2010, and pending FCC approval, is to be released in March 2010 (WiFi-only models) and April 2010 (WiFi + 3G models).[1][6]

The 1993 Apple Newton MessagePad 100

Apple’s development of a tablet computer began with the Newton MessagePad 100, which was introduced in 1993. The effort led to the creation of the ARM6 processor core with Acorn Computers. Apple also developed a prototype PowerBook Duo-based tablet computer named the PenLite, but didn’t release it to market as the company didn’t wish to affect sales of the Newton MessagePad. Apple brought out several more Newton-based PDAs, and discontinued the last of the line, the MessagePad 2100, in 1998.

Parts of this development process, especially relating to the development of iPhone OS, were combined with that of the iPhone and iPod Touch, and integrated technologies Apple had acquired from its acquisition of FingerWorks in 2005.The product was announced on January 27, 2010, at an Apple press conference at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. The device’s imminent release had been rumored for several months with iSlate and iTablet among speculated names.

Three days later, at the 52nd Grammy Awards, Stephen Colbert used an iPad in announcing the first nominee.

The iPad will come with the following applications: Safari, Mail, Photos, Video, YouTube, iPod, iTunes, App Store, Maps, Notes, Calendar, Contacts, and Spotlight. It will also include the iBooks application, which displays books and other ePub-format content downloaded from the iBookstore. Apple has ported its iWork suite from the Mac to the iPad; the Pages, Numbers and Keynote applications will be sold for $9.99 apiece in the App Store.

Product name controversy

Like the iPhone, the iPad shares its name with existing products. The most publicised of these relates to the Fujitsu iPAD, introduced by Japanese company Fujitsu in 2002. This is a mobile multi-functional device sold to retailers to help clerks verify prices, check inventory, and close sales. Fujitsu applied for the trademark in 2003 but this was hampered by the mark already being owned by Mag-Tek. Fujitsu’s application was listed as “abandoned” in April of 2009.

NEW YORK (AP) — R&B singer Teddy Pendergrass, who was one of the most electric and successful figures in music until a car crash 28 years ago left him in a wheelchair, has died of colon cancer. He was 59.

Pendergrass died Wednesday in suburban Philadelphia, where he had been hospitalized for months.

The singer’s son, Teddy Pendergrass II, said his father underwent colon cancer surgery eight months ago and had “a difficult recovery.”

Before the crash, Pendergrass established a new era of R&B with an explosive, raw voice that symbolized masculinity, passion and the joys and sorrow of romance in songs such as “Close the Door,” “It Don’t Hurt Now,” “Love T.K.O.” and other hits that have since become classics.

He was an international superstar and sex symbol. His career was at its apex — and still climbing.

Friend and longtime collaborator Kenny Gamble, of the renowned production duo Gamble & Huff, teamed with Pendergrass on his biggest hits and recalled how the singer was even working on a movie.

“He had about 10 platinum albums in a row, so he was a very, very successful recording artist and as a performing artist,” Gamble said Thursday. “He had a tremendous career ahead of him, and the accident sort of got in the way of many of those plans.”

Pendergrass, who was born in Philadelphia in 1950, suffered a spinal cord injury in a 1982 car accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down — still able to sing but without his signature power. The image of the strong, virile lover was replaced with one that drew sympathy.

In Memoriam: Remembering those we lost in 2009

But instead of becoming bitter or depressed, Pendergrass created a new identity — that as a role model, Gamble said.

“He never showed me that he was angry at all about his accident,” Gamble said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. “In fact, he was very courageous.”

Pendergrass left a remarkable imprint on the music world as he ushered in a new era in R&B with his fiery, sensual and forceful brand of soul and his ladies’ man image, burnished by his strikingly handsome looks.

Gamble said Pendergrass was one of a kind as an artist and boasted a powerful voice and “a great magnetism.”

“He was a great baritone singer, and he had a real smooth sound, but he had a real rough sound, too, when he wanted to exert power in his voice,” Gamble said.

But it wasn’t Pendergrass’ voice that got him his break in the music business — it was his drum playing abilities. He met Harold Melvin, who was looking for replacement members for his group, the Blue Notes, and signed on to be the drummer. Later, he became the lead singer of the group, which became known as Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.

The band started working with Gamble and Leon Huff and had signature hits in the early 1970s with “Wake Up Everybody” and “If You Don’t Know Me by Now.”

But Pendergrass had creative differences with Melvin and soon left for a solo career, according to his Web site. It was then he would become a sex symbol for the R&B genre, working women into a frenzy with hits such as “Only You” and concerts dedicated for ladies only.

“The females,” Gamble said, “loved Teddy Pendergrass. The females were very attracted to him and his music.”

Unlike the songs of many of today’s male R&B crooners, Pendergrass’ music bordered on eroticism without explicit lyrics or coarse language — just through the raw emotion in his voice. “Turn Off the Lights” was a tune that perhaps best represented the many moods of Pendergrass — tender and coaxing yet strong as the song reaches its climax.

Fans were devastated when, at age 31, Pendergrass was critically injured after his Rolls-Royce hit a tree. He spent six months in a hospital and returned to recording the next year with the album “Love Language.”

He continued to sing and recorded several albums, receiving Grammy nominations; perhaps his best-known hit after his crash was the inspirational song “Life is a Song Worth Singing.”

“To all his fans who loved his music, thank you,” his son said. “He will live on through his music.”

It was 19 years before Pendergrass resumed performing at his own concerts. He made his return on Memorial Day weekend in 2001, with two sold-out shows in Atlantic City, N.J.

Gamble noted Pendergrass’ charitable work for people with spinal cord injuries, his performances despite pain and his focus on the positive in the face of great challenges.

“He used to say something in his act in the wheelchair, ‘Don’t let the wheelchair fool you,’ because he still proclaimed he was a lover,” Gamble said.

But his career was never the same. Gamble said it was difficult for Pendergrass to project vocally like he once did: “The breathing aspect of it, he wasn’t really able to deal with it.”

And while he had albums, he was no longer seen as the sex symbol but more of a sympathetic, tragic figure, even though he still had a strong following among his core female fans.

After the accident, he dedicated much of his life to helping others with spinal cord injuries and founded the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance to do just that. Gamble said he wanted to help others.

“In his quiet moments, he probably did a lot of reflection. But I never saw him pity himself. He stayed busy,” Gamble said. “(But) I feel that he’s in a better place now. … He doesn’t have to go through that pain or whatever he was going through anymore.”

Ford proved that the domestic auto industry is ripe for a comeback by winning the North American Car and Truck of the Year awards with its Fusion Hybrid sedan and Transit Connect van.

A jury of 49 automotive journalists at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit picked the Fusion Hybrid over two other finalists — the Buick LaCrosse and Volkswagen Golf/GTI — for the way it offers superb fuel efficiency without compromising on practicality, amenities, space or driving enjoyment. Twenty-nine cars were considered for the award; only vehicles that are all-new or substantially changed for 2010 were considered.

Several jurors made note of the fact that the Fusion Hybrid can drive on electric propulsion alone at speeds up to 47 mph, which is about twice the top speed the Toyota Prius achieves in electric-only mode. Many jurors also found it remarkable that the Fusion Hybrid looks and drives like a regular car while returning an estimated 41 mpg city/36 mpg highway.

“Though not the first hybrid on the market, or even the second or third, the Fusion Hybrid is simply the best one ever built,” said Csaba Csere, a freelance journalist and former editor-in-chief of Car & Driver magazine.

Amid robust applause and hoots from Ford fans in the audience, Mark Fields, executive vice president of Ford Motor Co., bounded across the stage with a broad smile on his face to accept the award for top car. “We are very, very excited and honored to be in the company of such esteemed competition,” he said.

No sooner had Fields left the stage than he was called back up to accept the North American Truck of the Year award for the Transit Connect, among even more vigorous clapping and hollering. “Well, I guess I can use the same speech,” he said. “We’re really, really excited — there’s no question about it.”

The Ford Transit Connect is a quirky choice in that the small cargo van is primarily intended as a commercial vehicle for small businesses. It has been sold in Europe for several years but is new to North America. It can be outfitted with shelves, drawers and other equipment to suit particular needs. The base version has only two seats and no rear windows, but it can be outfitted with a rear seat and windows.

Jurors favored the Transit Connect because of its ability to haul up to 1,600 pounds of cargo in a small package that gets an estimated 22 mpg city/25 mpg highway. “It blends plenty of utility and capacity with agile dynamic moves and excellent fuel efficiency,” Csere said. “Plenty of 3-ton vans and pickups could — and should — be replaced by these machines.”

The Chevrolet Equinox and Subaru Outback were runners-up for the truck award among the 16 vehicles that were considered.

November 26, 2009, (Sawf News) – Cosmetic surgeons have pioneered a new technique for breast augmentation using ‘fat grafting,’ that involves the use of stem cells. The new process reduces the body’s absorption of the fat grafted into breasts, eliminating the need for top-up treatment. Traditional breast augmentation using ‘fat grafting’ involves harvesting fat from areas where it is in excess – like the abdomen, hips, thighs, or buttocks – and re-implanting it in the breast. The procedure is especially appealing to women who have reservations about saline or silicone gel breast implants. Women are happy that their fuller breasts are just them. Another advantage: the re-implanted fat is harvested from an area of the body where it is in excess. It is like killing two birds with one stone. The downside is, some of the fat re-implanted is reabsorbed by the body within a few months. Depending on the experience of the surgeon, the patient and some other factors in the body, 20 to 95 percent of transferred fat can be reabsorbed into the blood stream or simply die. With the new technique, the harvested fat is enriched with stem cells before being grafted into the breasts. Half the harvested fat is put through a special machine that extracts and condenses the stem cells, which are then mixed with the remaining fat before being injected into the breasts. The stem cells stimulate generation of a blood supply capillary network to the transplanted fat cells, which then integrate with the existing fat cells. As a result, breast augmentation is totally natural, permanent and instant. The procedure is done under local anesthesia. It is safe, with antibiotics being used to prevent infection. In late October, Dr Mike Comins of The Private Clinic in London performed the first stem cell enriched fat grafting in the UK on Lucy Mead, 23, a sales adviser who lives in Ruislip, Middlesex. He extracted fat from her thighs and hips using a process called Vaser Hi Def Liposuction (Vibration Amplification Sound Energy at Resonance). It involves the insertion of a 2-3 mm thick ultrasound probe made from titanium into the fatty areas. The ultrasound waves emitted from the rod liquefied the fat which was then sucked out by inserting a tiny tube. While removing 600 milliliters of fat, Dr Comins sculpted the areas to aesthetically improve it, carefully ‘carving’ fat away from around the key muscle groups. Half of the extracted fat was processed in a machine using Cytori Celution to extract the stem cells before mixing them with the remaining fat. Dr Comins then made two incisions in Lucy’s breasts and used local anesthetic to numb the tissue and muscle within. The fat and stem cells were injected into various points around her breasts to give them an appealing shape and volume. Following the minimally invasive surgery, Lucy was given antibiotics to prevent infection and asked to wear a sports bra for two weeks to facilitate healing. Lucy is perfectly satisfied with the result of the surgical procedure. “Friends tell me my breasts look amazing and, best of all, I know they’ll be with me for good now without fear of any of the complications you can get with implants such as rejection, calcification or even having to have them replaced in a decade’s time,” she says.

Informal Daytime: Short dress or suit (business attire OK for morning weddings)

Informal Evening: Cocktail dress Semi-Formal Daytime: Short dress or suit Semi-formal Evening: Cocktail dress Formal Daytime: Short dress or suit. Hats and gloves optional. Formal Evening or Black-Tie: Long or dressy short cocktail (beading, glam accessories, wrap) Ultra-formal or White Tie: Long gown, extra glitz (furs, diamonds, etc.)

Do’s and Don’ts for Her

Don’t wear white because it competes with the bride. There are plenty of other colors available.

Don’t wear black or sequins during the daytime.

Don’t worry about wearing the same colors as the bridesmaids or mothers. You can’t possibly coordinate with everyone in the wedding party.

Do wear something feminine and appropriate, out of respect for your hosts. Clubwear, overtly sexy clothing (strapless, see-through, etc) doesn’t belong at a wedding. If you have to ask if it’s appropriate, it probably isn’t.

Don’t wear opera-length gloves (to top of arm) with anything but sleeveless or strapless gowns.

Do take off gloves to eat or drink.

Do use good judgment if the invitation doesn’t specify the formality of the event. A pastel suit or soft floral dress for daytime or a little black dress for evening (after 6 p.m.) will take you almost anywhere.

Wedding Style for Him

Informal Daytime: Dress shirt and pants, preferably a sports jacket.

Informal Evening: Suit

Semi-Formal Daytime: Suit

Semi-Formal Evening: Dark suit

Formal Daytime: Dark suit and tie

Formal Evening: Tuxedo (if invitation states “black tie”) or dark suits if women wear short dresses.

Ultra-formal Evening or White Tie: White tie, vest and shirt.

Do’s and Don’ts for Him

Don’t try to get cute with a tuxedo. A black tux with white shirt and black bow tie is the best way to go. If “Creative Black Tie” or “Texas Formal” or some sort of other vague formal description is used, then going with a tux and black shirt, no tie, might be acceptable. Also, trendier cities like Los Angeles and New York might be more accepting of breaking with tradition.

Do wear a dark suit, with a tie if the wedding is after 6 PM, and doesn’t say “Black Tie.”

Don’t wear a tuxedo during the day time, regardless of the formality of the event.

Do use good judgment if the invitation doesn’t specify the formality of the event. A dark suit and conservative tie will take you just about

An actress with talent and poise beyond her 21 years, born in London and raised in New York, Mischa Barton has the kind of career most actors can only dream about. From humble beginnings in New York Theater in 1994 where she trained with such esteemed Director/Writers as James Lapine (”Twelve Dreams” at Lincoln Center with Donna Murphy), Tony Kushner (”Slavs!” at New York Theater Workshop with Marisa Tomei), and Naomi Wallace (”One Flea Spare” at the Public Theatre with Dianne Wiest), she went on to work side by side with modern-day screen icons including Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant on Notting Hill (1999), Bruce Willis and Toni Collette on The Sixth Sense (1999) and Sam Rockwell in her Sundance critically-lauded feature film debut Lawn Dogs (1997) produced by Duncan Kenworthy in 1998.
